We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lauren Pohle a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
"Lauren, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?"
"My strong work ethic is deeply rooted in the influence of my family and began during my childhood years. From a young age, I took to crafting bracelets to sell to others and would put on dance camps for neighborhood children. This allowed me to not only earn my first income, but fostered my creative and entrepreneurial mindset. The “work hard, play hard” ethos was ingrained in me, and while I admire my family’s diligence, I also recognized the importance of balance. I realized that I wanted a life where work was meaningful, yet not a sole focus. As I matured, I came to understand the profound influence of my core values and beliefs on my work ethic. When someone prioritizes achievement, balance, self-improvement, or making a meaningful impact, it often translates into a resolute commitment to their tasks. The propulsion of work ethic is equally fueled by personal and professional aspirations. Those who harbor a fervent passion for their goals tend to invest the necessary dedication and determination needed to attain them."
"Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?"
"In 2017, I embarked on my entrepreneurial journey as Nurse Lauren and I discovered a profound passion for the world of business. After studying and becoming a Nurse Practitioner, I opened an Aesthetic Medicine clinic called Modern Med. At Modern Med I practice as a Nurse Practitioner and diligently manage day-to-day operations alongside my dedicated team. Through the success of Modern Med, my entrepreneurial spirit led me to explore other areas such as the dynamic realm of fashion and e-commerce.
My second business I started, “LuMED”, is dedicated to correcting the medical fashion problem I experienced after years of having worn medical scrubs that do not fulfill basic functional tasks. LuMED is a luxury brand of scrubs with an athletic wear feel. My scrub line is meticulously crafted for performance by blending style with functionality. The world of e-commerce and the journey with LuMED have bestowed invaluable lessons within a remarkably short span. Witnessing its reach extend to nearly every corner of the United States, LuMED is a testament to our gradual brand growth strategy.
As I forge ahead, my sights are set on the next phase: the expansion and growth of Modern Med. I envision its size doubling and the realization of a long-held aspiration—owning the commercial space that houses my practice. This upcoming endeavor not only fulfills a personal goal, but also signifies the unwavering commitment to the ventures that have fueled my passion for entrepreneurship. I constantly strive for self-improvement, competing only with my own aspirations, and relentlessly seeking to explore new horizons!"
"Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?"
"Looking back I have learned so much. Certainly, there are many qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge that can greatly impact entrepreneurship, but here are three that are particularly impactful:
Resilience and Adaptability: Entrepreneurship is inherently filled with uncertainties and challenges. The ability to bounce back from failures, setbacks, and unexpected changes is crucial. Resilience allows entrepreneurs to maintain their determination and drive despite adversity. Adaptability is equally important, as markets, technologies, and customer preferences evolve rapidly. Being able to pivot and adjust your strategies in response to changing circumstances is key to long-term success.
Effective Communication and Networking: Communication is the foundation of all business interactions. Being able to clearly convey your ideas, vision, and value proposition to various stakeholders, including customers, investors, partners, and employees, is essential. Additionally, building a strong professional network can provide invaluable opportunities for collaboration, learning, and growth.
Financial Literacy and Management: Understanding the financial aspects of running a business is crucial for sustainability. Entrepreneurs need to be able to manage budgets, analyze financial statements, forecast cash flow, and make informed decisions based on financial data. This knowledge helps in making sound investment choices, securing funding, and ensuring the business remains profitable.
While these three qualities, skills, & knowledge areas are highly impactful, it’s important to note that entrepreneurship is a multifaceted endeavor, and being well-rounded in various aspects, such as leadership, marketing, innovation, and customer understanding, is also beneficial for overall success."
"To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?"
"The lessons of accountability and independence that my parents instilled in me hold immeasurable significance in where I am at today. Learning to take ownership of one’s actions and decisions fosters a strong sense of responsibility, which becomes the cornerstone of ethical behavior and personal growth. Equally vital is the cultivation of independence, the ability to think critically, make informed choices, and navigate life’s challenges with confidence. By instilling these qualities in me at a young age, I am equipped to contribute meaningfully to society and tackle the complexities of the world with resilience."
